History of the Gregorian Calendar
The Gregorian calendar is the most widely used calendar system in the world today. In this system, a standard year has 365 days, with an additional leap day added to February every four years. April, June, September, and November each contain 30 days, while the remaining months have 31 days, except for February, which has 28 days in a common year and 29 days in a leap year.
The Gregorian calendar evolved from the Julian calendar, which itself was a revision of the ancient Roman calendar. The earliest Roman calendar is believed to have been a lunar-based system, guided by the phases of the Moon. It originally consisted of 10 months totaling 304 days, leaving the remaining winter days unorganized. Over time, this caused the calendar to drift significantly, resulting in seasonal misalignment and the need for reform.
Later, the Roman Republican calendar adopted concepts from Greek calendars, assuming a lunar cycle of approximately 29.5 days and about 12.5 lunar months per solar year. To reconcile these differences, intercalary months January and February were occasionally added. However, inconsistencies persisted, leading to further attempts to better align the calendar with the solar year.
In 46 BC, Julius Caesar introduced a major reform that eliminated dependence on lunar observations. By adding 10 extra days, the year was standardized to 365 days, and a leap day every fourth year was introduced. This created the Julian calendar, which significantly improved accuracy but still contained a small error that caused gradual drift over time.
By the 16th century, the Julian calendar had fallen out of sync with the solar year by approximately 10 days. To correct this, Pope Gregory XIII implemented a reform in 1582, skipping 10 calendar days so that October 4 was followed by October 15. The leap year rules were also refined so that century years are leap years only if divisible by 400. These changes greatly improved accuracy, reducing the calendar’s error to about one day every 3,030 years.
Although adoption of the Gregorian calendar occurred gradually over several centuries, it has since become the dominant global calendar system. Despite periodic proposals for further reform, the Gregorian calendar remains the standard method for tracking dates worldwide.

Even when the same holiday is observed, practices may differ within or between countries. Some holidays result in a complete halt of normal activities, while others involve only partial closures. In certain countries, holidays can nearly shut down all business operations. For example, in Brazil, Carnaval leads to almost a full week during which most industries and retail establishments close, except for essential and carnival-related businesses.
